Claire Betis This blog was launched on July 11, 2007 as a modest - though hopefully useful - way to share news, ideas and best practices on speech recognition system implementations in healthcare environments. As a Marketing Manager for Crescendo Systems Corp. from 2004 to 2008, I have worked with many healthcare organizations to promote their respective - and usually tremendous - achievements in the area of medical records management through the proper use and integration of dictation, transcription and workflow management technologies. But when I first joined the industry is 2004, speech recognition had very few fans and a rather skeptical crowd among physicians. Speech recognition had been promising a brighter world for medical documentation since the 1980s but had systematically failed in delivering on its promises, leading healthcare facilities from a state of disillusionment to another.

However, the past few years have seen the most critical improvements, to the point where the Gartner Hypecycle for Healthcare Provider Technologies 2006 now considers speech recognition technology to have reached the “plateau of productivity” stage, delivering the long-awaited ROI figures. And as the demand grows, so does the volume of requests from customers wishing to keep up-to-date with the latest industry developments, news and related case studies. That’s how this whole blog idea came to life.

I hope that this blog, typically of interest to healthcare practitioners and IT professionals, will help you get a better understanding and answer some questions you may have on speech recognition technology applied to health record management - as opposed to off-the-shelf, consumer software, which is a different market altogether.
